For most of us, brushing our teeth has always looked the same. You squeeze toothpaste onto your brush, start brushing, and within seconds your mouth fills with foam. Somewhere along the way, we learned to believe that all those bubbles meant our teeth were getting cleaner.
But the truth is simple: bubbles don’t clean teeth — brushing does.
At Restore, we intentionally leave out SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) from our toothpaste. Not because it sounds better on a label, but because it genuinely leads to better brushing, healthier mouths, and better habits — especially for children.
Why Toothpaste Foams in the First Place
SLS is a foaming agent. Its only purpose in toothpaste is to create bubbles and spread flavour around the mouth. It doesn’t strengthen enamel, prevent cavities, or protect your teeth in any meaningful way.
Foam exists for one reason: to make toothpaste feel like it’s working.
But that feeling can be misleading.
When Foam Gets in the Way
When your mouth is full of bubbles, brushing becomes rushed and messy. You’re more likely to spit early, less able to see where you’ve brushed, and more focused on managing the foam than cleaning your teeth properly.
Without SLS, brushing becomes calmer and more intentional. You can actually see where plaque remains, where you’ve brushed thoroughly, and where you need to spend a little more time. The toothbrush — not the foam — does the real work.
This makes brushing more effective, not less.
The Hidden Effects of SLS
Because SLS is a detergent, it can be harsh on the delicate tissues in the mouth. Many people experience irritation, dryness, or a burning sensation after brushing. Others notice an increase in mouth ulcers or ongoing sensitivity.
For children, the concern is even greater. Kids often swallow toothpaste, and gentler formulas are always preferred for something used twice a day, every day.
Removing SLS helps create a brushing experience that feels comfortable, not aggressive.
Teaching Better Habits for the Next Generation
One of our biggest motivations at Restore is helping shape better oral care habits for children.
When kids grow up using foam-heavy toothpaste, they learn to associate “clean” with bubbles. Take the foam away, and they learn something far more important — that brushing well is about technique, patience, and coverage.
We want the next generation to expect clean teeth, not foam. To understand that a gentle toothpaste can still be highly effective. And to grow up with products that support their health, not overwhelm it.
Why Restore Chooses to Be SLS-Free
At Restore, every ingredient has a purpose. If it doesn’t support enamel health, comfort, or better brushing, it doesn’t belong in our toothpaste.
We choose to be SLS-free because:
- Foam doesn’t clean teeth
- Gentler formulas protect the mouth
- Brushing becomes more precise
- Families can brush with confidence
By removing unnecessary ingredients, we allow the important ones — like enamel-restoring minerals — to do their job.
At Restore, we believe less foam leads to better brushing, healthier habits, and stronger smiles — for today and for the next generation.
Because bubbles don’t mean it’s cleaner.
Brushing does.
